Being in touch with the Self

Last week, I was going through some of the pictures I have taken in my 20s. Couple of pictures really struck me and I was pleasantly surprised too.

Back then, I had a basic point and shoot camera and I can vividly remember the moments I took these pictures. I was just trying to make a technically perfect shot and whatever came inside the frame were mere objects for me then. I didn’t know the metaphorical meaning of a crow or sky, nor did I have any idea about photography as an art form.

Now, six or seven years later, I could see that I had managed to capture the state of my being in those days, so effortlessly in these images, without consciously intending to do so. It serves to be a reminder about the power of our subconscious mind and how it finds its own way of expressing itself, while the conscious mind is so unaware of the process.

The weekend evenings I spent in contemplation, while walking in the terrace of the ladies hostel, the loneliness I felt, my longing for companionship, being part of the rat race for survival amidst these emotions, all those moments resurface while looking at these pictures.

Further digging revealed the sources I took warmth from, to keep myself sane 🙂 The vast blue skies, the spring flowers, magical sunsets and full moon nights!

Akhila (An equally powerful source, she deserves a separate post) used to suggest me to explore with the camera to find some solace in managing my blues. I wish I realized the power of this medium or any form of art back then. I can sense that the journey could have been a lot smoother had I realized the potentials of art and literature in helping you to be in touch with your own Self! At the same time, I am glad at least now I realized it and aligned my values accordingly!
